On the clock

Work

I run the technology for my family's real estate business. Around that: three jobs and an eBay resale business, all before turning 20. The register taught me more about systems than I expected.

CTO

Jennifer B Wesley PLLC · real estate

I direct technology for my family's real estate business: leads and clients, showings and remodels. The team is lean. I lead tech, a family member manages remodels, and a showings agent handles viewings.

How I decide
  1. Build when it's within reach and adds real value. Buy when a mature tool is worth the cost.
  2. No outside developers. I build or configure it myself.
  3. Small, connectable pieces (Zapier or n8n) over one big system.
  4. Client and financial data privacy, and backups, come first.

Taco Bell

Campus Dining · about 12 hours a week

I work the line and the register on top of 19 units this term. Rush hour is the best time-management class I've had.

  • POS systems and cash handling
  • Accurate orders at speed, with a line watching
  • Teamwork where one slow station slows everyone
  • Built myself Line Build Flashcards to learn the menu: 14 recipes by station, each card flipping to the ordered build and portions

Dairy Queen

Front counter · junior year

My first counter job, held while I was on the robotics team and working at JLW Designs. It taught me to stay friendly when the line reaches the door.

  • Register and customer service
  • The ice cream station, where speed and consistency both count

Sales assistant · small business

I set up and ran vendor booths on my own and designed product displays to bring people in. Retail is a design problem with a cash register at the end.

Why the register counts

Fast food,
as engineering

01

Throughput

A line is a system with a bottleneck. You learn to find it in seconds and fix the station that's slowing everyone.

02

Precision

Orders and cash have to be exact, every time, even when it's loud and the line is long.

03

Requirements

Every customer is a different spec, and you get one pass to read it right.
